Can you believe that the start of the 2018 CrossFit Open is mere days away?! We are PSYCHED for this year’s competition, and we are SO excited that you have signed up to join us in our friendly intramural event as well. We want you to be completely prepared for how things are going down, so here’s what you need to know:
The teams have been set. Are you a Quadzilla? Breakfast Clubber? If you haven’t done so already, check the team roster here to find out what team you’re on and who your teammates are.
Go-time is 5:30 on Friday. Friday Night Lights, the designated time for your team to show up and throw down, will start promptly at 5:30 on Friday evenings. Even if you aren’t competing in the first heat, it’s important that you’re there at 5:30 so that you can see the workout brief and get the lowdown on the workout standards. No one wants to get no-repped.
**By the way–If you haven’t filled out the availability survey, make sure to do that here. If you need to be in an earlier or later heat, you can note that in the Comments box.
Team spirit is a must. We have set designated themes for each week of the Open. The team that shows the most spirit (which includes noise, theme pride, and overall spirit at Friday Night Lights) receives five points toward their score! This week’s theme is CrossFit West Lafayette pride, so dig out your CFWL gear (or create your own! Or paint your chest…) and bring it on.
**Psst–If you want to get a head start on the next few weeks, here’s a sneak peek at the themes list:
Week 1: CFWL pride
Week 2: Team pride
Week 3: Hawaiian spring break
Week 4: St. Patrick’s Day
Week 5: Superhero night
Feel free to bring the family. Childcare will be available at the cost of $5 per child. If you want to go all-in and bring them to every event, you can purchase a family pass covering the entire Open at this link.
Don’t miss an opportunity to rise to the challenge. Each week on Tuesday, we’ll post an additional challenge to the blog and Facebook group. This is an opportunity for your team to earn extra points by completing something extra. Only one team can win the challenge and get extra points, so be a team player and encourage your teammates to complete the challenge too! Week one’s challenge is handstand at work! Snap a photo of yourself or a teammate doing a handstand at work, post it on Facebook or Instagram, and tag @CrossFitWestLafayette. (And then go pick your coworkers’ jaws up off the floor.) Don’t have social media? Have a teammate post it and tag us.
Stay updated with Matt and Sarah! The CFWL Update Show has returned for a second season, and you don’t want to miss out! You can check out the first two episodes now on the CrossFit West Lafayette YouTube Channel and get the lowdown on scoring and new movement standards.
Join us Thursday for the 18.1 announcement. When Open workout 18.1 is unveiled on Thursday at 8 PM, we’ll be gathered at the box to hear it and watch two of our athletes go head-to-head. No points for this, but lots of fun and community!
And if you need a refresher on scoring…
1 point per team member checking in and completing the workout on Friday (Make sure to fill out this form so that we have your availability)
1 point per team member submitting a score on the CrossFit Games website
1 point per team member finishing in the top 3 men/women Rx’d each week at CFWL
1 point per team member winning highlight of the week (two chosen each week)
5 points (team) – the team with the most noise, pride, and THEME SPIRIT each week will receive 5 bonus points
5 points (team) – the team that wins the weekly bonus challenge (announced on Mondays) will receive 5 bonus points
That’s all for now, athletes! Get your work handstands on, and we’ll see you Friday!
