If you’re busy…
I’ve been thinking of you. I haven’t seen you around recently, and I miss your face! I know you mentioned that things are ‘crazy busy’ at work, but that was three weeks ago.
I know for me, I sometimes need someone to ‘snap me out of’ my funk and get me back into some healthy routines. The attractive offer is that I’ll be able to really hunker down for a few days (or a week) and clear off my schedule so that I can get back to taking care of myself. The reality though is that life rarely works this way. We give an inch and give up a mile. One day away from the gym becomes three, then a week. Then next week, and the next week. At some point it becomes easier to think about “someday” — internally we make the agreement that “I’ll get back to that eventually, but for the moment I’ve given up”.
I’ve been there, and the reality is that none of us are immune to the busyness of life that is SO common these days. Lately I have been spending too much time on social media just browsing, and it cultivates the feeling that I should be doing so much more — while at the same time encouraging the inaction of browsing (and imagining) rather than DOing. Taking a small, meaningful step can do wonders. We take an inch and gain a mile.
Earlier this week I felt too scattered to workout, but I decided to show up, without even committing to the workout. And I found that just being around other motivated people helped me forget my excuses and find first gear.
So let this note be a small call to action — a call to take an inch somewhere, a prompt to set aside disbelief and defeat and commit to one small step. Lace up those shoes, commit to the warm-up (or even just the drive to the gym).
And if you know someone who has been ‘busy’, maybe give them a call. Breakthrough could be an inch away.
